How to get a better massage.

How to get a even better massage.

In massage school I learned to meet my client where they were in conversation. Meaning, if they’re talking during their massage, I shouldn’t be rude and not talk to them. Reason being some people are stressed out and need to vent about what’s on their mind so they can move into relaxation.

That’s NOT relaxation nor does it allow for healing to happen.

Healing happens in your body ONLY when you’re relaxed.

Massage therapy is one way to engage the relaxation response in your body to allow healing to happen.

Side note: I’m working on an eBook about 10 tips to engage the relaxation response. When it’s done, you’ll be one of the first to get your FREE copy!

So today I’m here to help you get an even better massage with the following 9 tips:

1. If you’ve had a rough day and need to vent, tell your therapist you want 5 minutes of venting time. After the 5 minutes, allow yourself to stop talking and let go…unwind...relax...

2. Arrive at your massage 10 minutes early and bring a piece of paper. Write out everything that’s bugging you. Letting it go on paper is still venting.

3. Don’t drink a caffeinated beverage 4 hours before your massage. Caffeine stimulates your body and mind, making relaxation next to impossible for some people.

4. If you’re generally quiet during your massage, but you’re thinking, problem solving or just have busy mind, ask your massage therapist to spend the first few minutes massaging your feet. Bringing your attention down to your feet and out of your head helps ground you and move you from thinking about stuff to “OH this feels SO GOOD”.

5. Massage and deep tissue massage shouldn’t be painful to be effective. If you’re experiencing pain during your massage, your body is engaging the stress response. The exact opposite of healing. If your therapist is working too deep for your comfort, be sure to let them know. I know it’s hard to tell your therapist they are working too deep, but I assure you, we want to know! You feeling awesome is our #1 priority.

6. Tell your therapist how you want to feel after your massage. If your neck is sore and you can barely move it, let her know moving your neck without pain is your goal for that days treatment. If you want to relax and do a full body massage, let her know you want to relax and unwind. Your massage is your time and investment. We want you to experience exactly (or close to it as we can) what you want.

7. Ask to schedule your next appointment BEFORE your massage so you don’t have to think about schedules after your massage.

8. Pay for your massage BEFORE your massage so you can float out of the office or even sit and have a cup of tea. (We offer free tea, water and lemon water in our waiting room).

9. When you get home take an Epsom salt bath. Epsom salts are made from magnesium. Magnesium is the “calm and relaxation” mineral. Soaking in a hot tub with 2 cups of Epsom salts is sure to keep the relaxation response going. Another side note: Most Americans are magnesium deficient due to stressful lifestyle and the lack of minerals in our food supply.

Read what a couple of her clients are saying:

~ My husband and I were clients of Tiffany's for about 4 years. We could give high kudos to her massage techniques, but there is much more than that. Tiffany listens to her clients and adjusts her technique to work for them.

~ I met Tiffany last fall and soon after, she impressed (and helped:) me with a massage that was skilled and intuitive. She is able to address an individual's needs in technique, focus and pressure, which she seems able to aptly vary in accord with the issue she working with and client preference. She is passionate and caring about what she does.

~ Her massage is gentle yet effective. She can tailor it to your needs and can do a great deep tissue without the hurtful pain! Love her!
